Neodymium (rare earth) magnets are the strongest magnets available.
They should be used where space is it a premium or a very high level of magnetism is required. Alnico and ferrite magnets may be a more cost-effective alternative if the strength to size ratio is not that critical.
Low maximum operating temperature of 120 degrees C.
Neodymium itself is brittle and has poor corrosion resistance so it is usually coated or used as part of a magnetic assembly (where the magnet material is contained in a metal 'pot' - see our Neodymium magnet assemblies.
Anisotropic (the magnet strength is strongest in one direction).
Alloys are available which increase maximum operating temperatures but at the expense of magnet strength. Please contact us for more information about this and custom sizes.
